Let’s face it; we all love a bit of juicy celebrity scandal, and 2013 brought it by the bucket-load. Here are some of the most scandalous celeb stories of the year.
1. Miley Cyrus’ MTV VMA Performance

We all knew her as the innocent Disney child star of Hannah Montana, but when Miley Cyrus stripped down to a nude latex bra and knickers on stage at the MTV VMAs, tongue out, touching herself with a giant foam finger and twerking against Robin Thicke, we gasped and covered our eyes in horror. Of course, no amount of disturbed shock (we’ll never forget the expressions of Will Smith and his family) would deter Miley from her course to world domination, with her new-found fame as one of the most controversial stars of 2013 scoring her a number one album and the most viewed video of the year for her naked stint in Wrecking Ball. All in all, a good year then!
2. Robin Thicke’s ‘Sexist’ Video For Blurred Lines
It was the catchy song of the summer that we just couldn’t stop humming along to, but Robin Thicke landed himself in hot water for the risqué video for Blurred Lines, which featured himself, Pharrell Williams and rapper T.I cavorting with a bevvy of scantily clad (or naked, depending on which version you watched) beauties. The scandal was enough to earn Thicke the title of ‘Sexist of the Year’, despite his insistence that the song was written for his wife, Paula. Pull the other one, Robin!
3. Justin Bieber’s Trip To A Brazilian Brothel
All in all, it proved a bad year for pop’s young rogue, Justin Bieber. Photos of him smoking what appeared to be marijuana, as well as a video which showed his minders carrying him up the Great Wall of China only proved to be the tip of the iceberg; it was his disastrous trip to Rio that was the icing on the cake for the Boyfriend singer. Not only was he reportedly spotted leaving a brothel, but a video also surfaced of him sleeping like a baby while the woman with whom he had apparently spent the night with laughed into the camera. God only knows what he’ll get up to in 2014!
4. Miley Cyrus Vs Sinéad O’Connor
I’m sure we all felt a need to reach out to Miley this year, but Sinéad O’Connor was one of the few celebs who actually went there – with some nasty results. It all started when Miley praised the Irish singer’s talents during an interview, hailing the Nothing Compares To You singer as an idol of hers. Sinéad responded with a (pretty sound) open letter to 20-year-old Miley, expressing her concern for some of her more controversial choices, but insisting that she was only doing so ‘out of love’. Were we all fools to expect a mature reply from Miley? Apparently so! What ensued was a war of words between the two singers, after Miley appeared to make fun of Sinéad for her past mental illness. Four open letters later, and Miley had had just about enough – and simply opted to ignore Sinéad’s words of wisdom from thereon in. We won’t be expecting a collaboration any time soon, then!
5. Simon Cowell Expecting A Baby…With His Friend’s Wife
The media went into overdrive after it was revealed that Simon Cowell was expecting a baby with Lauren Silverman, the wife of the X Factor mogul’s (presumably now former) close friend, Andrew Silverman. Aside from the fact that Cowell previously insisted that he would never have children, the scandal was made all the more juicy by the fact that Cowell and Silverman had not even gone exclusive with their relationship. Fast forward to the end of 2013 and the couple are said to be ecstatically excited about welcoming mini-Simon in the early spring, with talk of an impending engagement also rife.
6. Amanda Bynes’ Meltdown
If you didn’t know who Amanda Bynes was at the start of 2013, chances are you will be well familiar with her going into 2014. The 27-year-old retired actress came back into the media spotlight this year after a very sad, very public meltdown. It all started with an onslaught of bizarre, erratic tweets in which the Hairspray actress told rapper Drake that she wanted him to ‘murder her vagina’, before posting a number of photos of herself looking worryingly thin, completely transformed by plastic surgery, and smoking a suspicious substance. Matters came to a head when the star was arrested for reportedly throwing a bong out of her apartment window and setting fire to her neighbour’s driveway. Thankfully, Amanda is said to be on the road to recovery after a stint in rehab, and is hoping to go back to college to study fashion.
7. Lance Armstrong Admits Using Performance-Enhancing Drugs On Oprah
The sporting world was well and truly rocked when Lance Armstrong, the seven-time champion of the Tour De France, finally admitted to using performance enhancing drugs throughout his career, during an interview with Oprah. Armstrong, who is banned from competitive cycling for life, was forced to return all titles and prize money as a result. Speaking in the interview, Armstrong memorably said: “I would say I was both a jerk and a humanitarian. But now we’re seeing more of the jerk.” So it seems!
8. Beyoncé Lip-Syncing The National Anthem
We would normally say that she can do no wrong, but we saw a major (albeit, uncharacteristic) slip-up on Beyoncé’s part in 2013, when she was seen to lip-sync the national anthem at President Obama’s inauguration. Queen B responded to the hurt of her fans by saying: “I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra. Due to the weather, due to the delay, due to no proper sound check…I did not feel comfortable singing live.” We think we’ll leave her off this once, you know, since she managed to keep her fifth album a complete secret and still managed to get it to number one with NO PROMOTION WHATSOEVER.
9. Lamar Odom & Khloe Kardashian Divorce
When it came to celebrity couples, Khloe Kardashian and her Lam-Lam seemed like they were in it for the long haul – then 2013 happened. While rumours of relationship problems had been swirling around the reality stars for months, it wasn’t until basketball player Lamar went AWOL and reportedly checked into rehab for drug problems that it all hit the fan. One emotional open letter to his father, Joe, in which Lamar defended Khloe and her family, as well as a rather ironic follow-up video of him rapping about cheating on her appearing online, and it seems like it’s all over for reality TV’s young dream, with Khloe filing for divorce in December. We won’t lie, we’re very sad about this one. We hope everything works out for them!
10. Reese Witherspoon’s Arrest
She’s the sugary-sweet and innocent Hollywood star that we all know and love, which is why the world reacted with surprise and shock when it was revealed that Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim Toth had been arrested – he, for driving under the influence, and she for disorderly behaviour. The couple were pulled over after their car was seen weaving across a double line, and while Toth was in the driver seat, it was Reese’s erratic behaviour that led to her subsequent arrest. According to the police officer who made the arrest, the actress refused to get out of the car, saying that she didn’t believe he was a real policeman. To make matters worse, the Sweet Home Alabama star appeared to find the mugshot process deeply hilarious, while a video of their arrest also appeared online.
